Overall Responsibilities

MSH seeks a Senior Nutrition Technical Advisor for an anticipated 5-year, $50-75 million, USAID-funded Community Integrated Nutrition and Sanitation project in Afghanistan that will deliver high-impact interventions in maternal and child nutrition, hygiene and sanitation, private sector participation, income generation for women and household food security. The project will be of nationwide scope with field activities in selected provinces of the country.

This position is contingent upon project award and funding.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Leads the design and implementation of the project’s maternal and child nutrition activities. These activities will be delivered to governments, families and communities as part of an integrated package of interventions by MSH, its implementing partners, local NGOs or government health providers.

Specific results of the work of the Sr. Nutrition Technical Advisor (and his/her team) at the national level will be:

  • Multi-sectoral nutrition policies implemented effectively
  • Key Nutrition coordination bodies functioning
  • Public Nutrition Department nutrition leadership and stewardship at national and provincial levels enhanced
  • Civil society's (BPHS implementers) capacity to provide nutrition services increased
  • In-service nutrition training programs institutionalized in Afghan Institutions (public and private) across sectors

Specific results of the work of the Sr. Nutrition Technical Advisor (and his/her team) in the focus provinces will be:

  • Increased adoption of optimal maternal and infant and young child nutrition behaviors
  • Community's capacity to develop and implement locally identified solutions to improve nutrition enhanced.2.Coordinate the nutrition-related expertise of MSH and its implementing partners, which will include international, national and local organizations so that the project’s technical interventions represent the best of our aggregate expertise.
  • Link with technical counterparts in government and international development agencies and NGOs, private sector and corporate organizations to coordinate and leverage the project’s technical interventions.
  • Contribute to the strengthening of MSH’s presence in Afghanistan
    Qualifications
  • University-graduated health professional (medical doctor, nutritionist, nurse, midwife) with a public health and/or nutrition masters degree.
  • Minimum of 8 years of successful experience as senior-level technical or program manager of public health projects of equivalent size and complexity, funded by USAID or by other international donors.
  • Within or outside the above cited experience, the position requires at least 8 years of part-time or 4 years of full-time experience in maternal and child health nutrition. An example of part-time experience is a senior manager of a maternal and child health program with a strong nutrition component. This experience can be in government, international development agencies or local/international NGOs.
  • Successful experience leading technical staff and consultants within a consortium of international and local sub-contractors to achieve measurable results within a technically complex and integrated health program.
  • Successful experience strengthening leadership and management capacities of national and sub-national government health systems and of local NGOs.
  • Successful experience engaging technical representatives of the host country government, academic and research organizations, civil society organizations, international development organizations and private sector to support project implementation and/or to provide complementary resources to the project.
  • Successful experience of working within a Project Team in a collaborate manner, sharing knowledge, documenting experience, supporting creative initiatives.
  • Demonstrated strategic agility, diplomacy, conflict management, team building, written and oral communication in English, and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in the following:Working in programs addressing nutrition, sanitation and health needs of populations living in Afghanistan
    Working in programs which include hygiene and sanitation, private sector participation, income generation for women and household food security.
